These remarkable Chanel buttons began life on a Chanel blouse from the 1950s, a decade widely regarded as one of the most elegant periods in French fashion. Following the austerity of the war years, Paris re-established itself as the unquestioned capital of style. Women embraced beautifully tailored clothing, refined fabrics, and accessories that spoke of quality rather than excess. Chanel’s designs of the period reflected that philosophy perfectly, proving that true luxury lay in impeccable craftsmanship and enduring style.

An Original Piece of Chanel History

At the centre of each earring sits an authentic vintage Chanel button, preserved with its distinctive raised double C motif and beautifully detailed split hammer edge border. It is this border that immediately caught my attention when designing these earrings. Rather than surrounding the buttons with a plain highly polished rub over setting, I carefully recreated the same textured edge in sterling silver, allowing the craftsmanship of the original buttons to continue seamlessly into the finished piece.

From the moment I began planning these earrings, I knew they could only ever be finished in gold. The richness of the original buttons demanded it. Each handcrafted sterling silver setting has therefore been lavishly plated in 24ct yellow gold vermeil, creating a warm, luxurious finish that perfectly complements the heritage of the buttons themselves. The result feels entirely authentic to the spirit of Chanel and wonderfully at home in a modern jewellery collection.

Every component of the setting has been individually handcrafted by me in solid sterling silver before receiving its vermeil finish. The buttons are carefully mounted within bespoke settings, ensuring they remain the focal point of the design while being protected for years to come. This is the kind of jewellery that simply cannot be mass produced. Each pair requires time, precision, and a deep respect for the history of the original buttons.

What is 24ct Yellow Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a layer of real gold over solid sterling silver. To be called vermeil, the gold must be at least 10ct and plated at a certain thickness. At Porsha Bella Jewellery, I use 24ct yellow gold, the purest, richest toned gold, for a luxurious finish that’s both elegant and enduring.

Caring for Your Gold Vermeil Jewellery

Gold vermeil is a thick layer of 24ct gold over sterling silver.   Luxurious, but delicate. To keep it looking beautiful:

• Avoid water, sweat, perfumes, and lotions.

• Remove before showering, swimming, or exercising.

• Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth,  no harsh cleaners.

• Store pieces separately in a dry, cool place.

Over time, gentle fading is natural. It adds character, but re-plating is always an option if you’d like a refresh.

Now for the legal stuff:-

Please note, all buttons used in my creations are antique, vintage, or second hand, and will naturally show signs of their previous lives.  Such as gentle surface marks, tiny dents, enamel wear, or soft tarnishing.
Each button is carefully tested and securely set, but as these treasures can be well over a century old, they remain delicate and should be treated with the same care as any fine antique.

While the jewellery itself is professionally handcrafted from solid precious metals using traditional goldsmith techniques, designed to last a lifetime, the historic buttons, pearls, and crystals within these designs are inherently more fragile. Their age and patina are what make them so special.
To preserve your piece, please avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, perfume, or impact. Treat it gently, and it will bring you many years of beauty and admiration.
