These stunning buttons are from a 1950’s vintage Chanel white fit and flair evening dress. Chanel launched the spring 1953 Paris Fashion parade with these timeless, stunning dresses. It’s said there was a lot of silk, cotton and organza at that year’s catwalk.
Although these buttons didn’t have a major role, as there were only on the back of the bodice of the dress, the design of the buttons are yet again a testament to Chanel’s attention to every detail. The buttons are plastic with very raised double C logos, which is in a gold tone metal. The C’s are textured and have really tiny diamanté crystals scattered throughout the texture. I love that the Chanel logo is more 3 dimensional than being flat against the button surface.
Now, let me tell you my thoughts behind the setting design. As much as I love a discreet, subtle rub over setting, I’m really a sucker for a bold, thick and chunky rub over edge. I just felt these buttons looked more balance with a truly substantial amount of silver on display. White and silver give such a sharp, crisp effect too.
Of course the back of the earrings have little portholes that show the button hook, which is something I think is unique to my designs. From the feedback I’ve been given over the years, it seems this feature is really popular. When my designs have been admired by strangers, the shock of hearing that “they’re vintage buttons” is very often met with disbelief, so it’s nice to be able to actually show that the button is still there, it’s just been repurposed into a unique piece of jewellery.
This revelation usually sparks a conversation about how nice it is that someone is utilising these treasures from the past, in such a unique and beautiful way.
As you may already know, the sterling silver I’ve used in these and all my creations, is 100% recycled. This reduces waste and many other adverse environmental impacts, but has no negative impact on the properties or quality of the metal.
So you know you’re consciously purchasing a little luxury that’s not contributing to the over consumption problems we’re currently facing. Wow, that took a bit of a serious turn, but I do think it’s good for you to know the origins of Porsha Bella Jewellery. I love that I’m able to do something I feel really passionately about, but I’m doing it in a way that cares for our world and brings pieces of history that already exist, back to life for years to come.
Your jewellery journey begins, with a piece of hand crafted wearable history. Made especially for you, by Porsha Bella Jewellery.
*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives. Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing. I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons. In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable. I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack. Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity. *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.
Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing. These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals. I never take my jewellery off. However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look. If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time. If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
