“Penny” Vintage Chanel Pearl Button Earrings

The 1950’s was the start of Coco Chanel’s love of pearls, becoming evident as the fashion house started to include them in their designs.  Coco Chanel was rumoured to have said “Any outfit can be elevated by the simple addition of pearls.”  Do you agree?

These petite pearl and chain edge detail buttons were originally worn on the bodice of a very fitted dress.  The dress was black with cuffed, elbow length sleeves.  The cuffs were white and also had one of these pearl button embellishments.

Pearl jewellery is so timeless, feminine and always elegant.  Now, pearls that are vintage Chanel, well that just adds a whole other level of special.  Don’t you just love how something like a button, that’s been around for years, is now a piece of really beautiful jewellery?  Every time I start a new creation, using buttons from years gone by, I still marvel at how lovely they are and how they’re for the most part, taken for granted.  I love that the button, in its original form, is still visible.  It pains me to have to hide it’s past, but sometimes it’s just not possible to retain that part of the design, but for these earrings, you can still see the button hook at the back of the earring.

I tend to be drawn to pearl drop earrings, as opposed to pearl studs, but I thought I’d create something with these buttons, that combines both elements.  I’ve added a reverse pear shaped stud, which is encrusted with tiny, sparkling lab created diamonds.  This design now gives you pearls and sparkle.  The earrings sit really nicely and comfortably, which means you can were them all day and well into the night.
