A Black Button With A Remarkable Past

This beautiful black Chanel button dates all the way back to the 1920s and once belonged to the rear pocket flaps of some of the earliest ladies’ trousers created by Chanel.

It is difficult to look at something this small and comprehend what it represents.

The Venice Story

During one of Coco Chanel’s stays in Venice, she is said to have become fascinated by watching women attempting to climb in and out of gondolas whilst restricted by long skirts and dresses.

Men could simply step aboard in their trousers.

Women could not.

And Coco Chanel saw the problem.

When Women Began Dressing For Themselves

It took Chanel’s particular vision to question why women’s clothing had to restrict the very women wearing it. Whilst in Venice, it is said that she began sketching her earliest ideas for women’s trousers.

Back in Paris, those ideas became reality.

Over one hundred years ago, women were beginning to wear clothing created not simply to make them look beautiful, but to allow them to move through the world with greater freedom and confidence.

This little black button was part of that story.

A Button Worth Preserving

I have transformed this remarkable original button into a piece of wearable history, setting it by hand in solid sterling silver with my signature open back. The original button hook remains visible, giving you a direct connection to the button’s first life.

A tiny white freshwater cultured pearl hangs from the carabiner clasp as my nod to Coco Chanel’s love of pearls. And because sometimes you want the button to speak for itself, the pearl can easily be removed.

Wear It Your Way

Wear the black Chanel button as a pendant from a fine chain or a strand of pearls, or attach it to your bracelet as a distinctive charm.

The sterling silver carabiner clasp makes changing the way you wear it wonderfully easy.

*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives.  Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing.  I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons.  In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable.  I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack.  Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity.  *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.

Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.  These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals.  I never take my jewellery off.  However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look.  If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time.  If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
