This extraordinary white Chanel button dates all the way back to the 1920s and once sat on the rear pocket flaps of some of the very first ladies’ trousers created by Chanel.

More than one hundred years later, it is still carrying the story of the woman who helped change what women could wear.

When Coco Chanel Saw A Problem

The story began during one of Coco Chanel’s stays in Venice, where she is said to have watched women struggling to climb in and out of gondolas gracefully while constrained by long skirts and dresses. Men moved with complete freedom in their trousers.

Coco noticed the difference.

Fashion Designed For Freedom

It took Coco Chanel to look at that everyday frustration and imagine something different for women. Whilst in Venice, it is said she began sketching her earliest ideas for women’s trousers. Once back in Paris, those ideas became reality.

Suddenly clothing could be about more than how a woman looked.

It could be about how she moved.

It could be about freedom.

It could be about independence.

These tiny white buttons were part of that extraordinary shift.

Preserving The Original

I have preserved this original Chanel button in a hand crafted solid sterling silver setting with my signature open back, allowing the original button hook to remain visible.

I have also added a tiny white freshwater cultured pearl drop to the clasp as a very fitting nod to Coco Chanel’s love of pearls. If you prefer the simplicity of the button alone, the pearl drop can easily be removed.

The sterling silver carabiner clasp means you can decide exactly how you want to wear this piece. Attach it to a fine chain, wear it with your pearls, or add it to a bracelet as a beautifully unexpected Chanel charm.

*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives.  Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing.  I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons.  In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable.  I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack.  Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity.  *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.

Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.  These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals.  I never take my jewellery off.  However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look.  If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time.  If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
