A Button From The Beginning Of A Revolution

This remarkable red Chanel button dates all the way back to the 1920s, when Coco Chanel was beginning to challenge the way women were expected to dress. Originally created for the rear pocket flaps of some of the earliest ladies’ trousers associated with Chanel, this tiny piece of fashion history was part of something much bigger than decoration.

When Coco Chanel Saw A Problem

The story began during one of Coco Chanel’s stays in Venice, where she is said to have become fascinated watching women attempting to climb gracefully in and out of gondolas while restricted by long skirts and dresses. Men, wearing trousers, could move with ease. Women could not.

Coco saw the problem immediately.

Fashion Designed For Women

It took someone with Chanel’s vision to question something women had simply been expected to accept. Whilst in Venice, it is said that she began sketching her earliest ideas for women’s trousers. Once back in Paris, those ideas became reality and fashion began to change.

More than one hundred years ago, women were beginning to embrace clothing designed not simply for appearance, but for movement, confidence and independence.

These tiny red buttons were there for that revolution.

A Piece Of Fashion History You Can Wear

I have preserved this extraordinary original button forever in a hand crafted solid sterling silver setting with my signature open back, leaving the original button hook visible. That little detail is important to me because it keeps the connection to its first life completely intact.

I have added a tiny white freshwater cultured pearl to the clasp as a nod to Coco Chanel’s legendary love of pearls. The pearl drop can easily be removed whenever you prefer to wear the piece without it.

*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives.  Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing.  I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons.  In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable.  I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack.  Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity.  *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.

Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.  These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals.  I never take my jewellery off.  However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look.  If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time.  If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
