When Coco Chanel opened her iconic store in 1954 on the Rue Cambon, it was already well established that Madame Chanel loved pearls and all pearl jewellery.
She had an idea that all the couture on display in the store, be draped in Chanel costume jewellery. Of course pearls featured very heavily in the Chanel costume jewellery line.
This pendant is from the early 1960’s and was originally a Chanel brooch. Imagine if this was one of those costume pieces in the store at that time….how amazing would that be!
As I’ve mentioned before, I have two reliable sources for my vintage designer buttons, tags and zipper pulls. I was recently sent this from the Parisian gentleman who has an incredibly extensive collection of all things designer. Some items are not for sale, but he often sends me emails with different things he thinks I might be interested in.
He went to the Paris designer auctions and he managed to find some of these vintage brooches, but somewhere along the line, the brooch pins had been broken. We’ve been working together now for several years, so he knows what I like and what I can do with vintage designer things, so as soon as he won the bid for some of the brooches, he contacted me immediately. He only had to say “Chanel pearl brooch” and I said “yes! I’ll take it”
I love the substantial size of this brooch, it makes such a great pendant.
Completely hand crafted in solid sterling silver, with a large, chunky sterling silver bail, that may even allow you to string this onto your pearls. The brooch was originally a gold/rose toned brooch, so you could wear it with either a silver chain or a gold chain or even a velvet choker.
If you’ve ever wanted to own a genuine vintage Chanel brooch, now you can.
I can really see this adding the perfect touch to your LBD, jeans and a sweater or jacket. It’s such a gorgeous statement piece of jewellery, plus it comes with this lovely history and such a beautiful transformation.
