Picture Venice in the early 1920s,  the war had ended, the air was charged with the desire for beauty, colour and freedom. Gondolas glided across shimmering canals, their dark silhouettes slipping under stone bridges. For women, however, this romantic city posed a challenge. The long skirts and dresses of the era made stepping in and out of gondolas anything but graceful.

Coco Chanel’s Revolutionary Vision

Coco Chanel, visiting Venice at this time, watched as men moved with ease,  while women clutched at their skirts, struggling for balance. In that moment, she envisioned a radical solution…. elegant trousers designed specifically for women. It was daring, even scandalous, to imagine women in such attire, but Chanel understood that style and freedom of movement could, and should, coexist.

The brave women who first wore Chanel’s trousers were not simply following a trend,  they were making a statement. They were defying expectation, challenging tradition, and embracing a new vision of femininity, one of independence, confidence, and quiet rebellion. These Chanel buttons, once proudly adorning the back pocket of those first trousers, are a piece of that revolutionary history.

What is 24ct Yellow Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a layer of real gold over solid sterling silver. To be called vermeil, the gold must be at least 10ct and plated at a certain thickness. At Porsha Bella Jewellery, I use 24ct yellow gold, the purest, richest toned gold, for a luxurious finish that’s both elegant and enduring.

Caring for Your Gold Vermeil Jewellery

Gold vermeil is a thick layer of 24ct gold over sterling silver.   Luxurious, but delicate. To keep it looking beautiful:

• Avoid water, sweat, perfumes, and lotions.

• Remove before showering, swimming, or exercising.

• Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth,  no harsh cleaners.

• Store pieces separately in a dry, cool place.

Over time, gentle fading is natural. It adds character, but re-plating is always an option if you’d like a refresh.

*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives.  Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing.  I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons.  In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable.  I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack.  Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity.  *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.

Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.  These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals.  I never take my jewellery off.  However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look.  If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time.  If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
