The 1950’s in Paris was all about glamour. It was during the 1950’s that we saw catwalks showing an abundance of crystals and diamantés adorning the latest haute couture collections. It’s no surprise Chanel let the way when it came to adding this trend in a classy, sophisticated way.
Coco Chanel loved the idea of her designs being enough – no need for accessories. Her pieces were all any fashion conscious woman needed.
I’m in awe of these buttons. They’ve survived nearly 70 years, but when they arrived, I couldn’t even tell if they were gold or silver toned and the crystals had lost all their sparkle. It wasn’t until I cleaned, dipped and polished them, that I realised they were textured and not completely scratched and dented, but that they’re a lovely rich gold tone.
They do have some really tiny little dents, but I’m still not sure if it’s past life damage, or part of the design, but they’re certainly not bad or distracting from how totally gorgeous they are. They even have the Chanel marque on the back of the buttons, that I’ve made sure is visible. This is also another sign of authenticity and value.
These buttons are from a fit and flair, below knee dress – dated 1957. Judging from the state they were in, I think they’ve lived a pretty full life. The dress was purchased at an auction in Paris, but it was badly stained and had an unfortunate burn on the bodice. I believe the undamaged fabric has been repurposed and I had the opportunity to purchase the buttons. I’m so glad I did!
The setting is completely hand crafted, in my workshop located in the French Alps. I’ve used solid sterling silver in both the setting and the ear hooks. The setting is a classic bezel/rub over setting with a high polish. The ear hooks are a little different too, which just adds to the beauty of the buttons.
I love that these earrings are so glamorous, but are still a pair you can wear all day every day.
