Chanel Meets the Power Dressing Era

The early 1980s were not interested in being understated.

Fashion became bigger, bolder and more architectural. Geometric shapes were everywhere, and the padded shoulder became one of the defining silhouettes of the decade.

So when I discovered these Chanel buttons from an early 1980s coat, I could not help imagining the coat they once belonged to.

And yes, I am fairly certain those shoulders were padded.

Bold Chanel in a Pewter Satin Finish

The hexagonal shape immediately caught my attention.

There is something wonderfully architectural about these buttons. They have a strong geometric presence that gives them an almost brutalist quality, while the soft pewter colour and satin finish stop them from becoming too severe.

Against the polished sterling silver setting, they look incredibly striking.

The vintage button has all the attitude of the 1980s, but the finished earring feels surprisingly modern.

The Clip On You Will Actually Want to Wear

I have also paid particular attention to the backs of these earrings.

The vintage buttons are set into solid sterling silver, with a brushed finish on the back rather than a high polish. I wanted the surface of the silver to relate to the satin finish of the original button, so the two feel like they belong together.

And then there is the clip mechanism.

These are my new and improved clip on earrings, designed so you can put them on in the morning without spending the rest of the day counting down until you can take them off.

They are secure, comfortable and made to be worn properly.

All day if you want to.

All night if the occasion calls for it.
