Description

A Rare Treasure from a Bygone Era

At the heart of this piece lies a remarkable Czech black glass button, believed to date from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Highly prized during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these buttons were admired for their deep glossy sheen and beautifully detailed designs.

Often called jet glass, this material offered a luxurious yet accessible alternative to real jet and quickly became popular throughout Europe. In France, it featured prominently in fashion and millinery, adding jewel like accents to gowns, coats and accessories.

The Beauty of Survival

Authentic antique buttons in excellent condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Their delicate nature, combined with more than a century of wear, makes this button a rare survivor. The scarcity of pieces like this transforms it from a beautiful object into a genuine treasure with a fascinating history.

The Harlequin Colour Play

The true enchantment of this button lies in its captivating colour play. Known as Harlequin glass, it shifts and dances with the light, moving effortlessly from deep ocean blue to vivid emerald green and flashes of brilliant golden yellow.

This magical optical effect was once the hallmark of highly skilled glass artisans and remains just as mesmerising today.

A Necklace That Feels Destined to Be

To complement the extraordinary colours within the button, I have paired the pendant with an equally captivating necklace featuring cultured pearls, sterling silver links and some wonderful Harlequin style beads.

The relationship between the button and the beads is nothing short of remarkable. The colours echo one another so perfectly that they appear to have been created together, despite being separated by more than a century. As the light changes, both the button and beads reveal new flashes of blue, green and gold, creating an ever changing display of colour and movement.

Handcrafted Sterling Silver Setting

To honour its striking surface and heritage, I created a sterling silver setting that holds the button securely and elegantly. The textured beaten edge adds depth and contrast, enhancing the intricate motifs and vibrant tones. A handcrafted bail and ring complete the piece, lending an added layer of artisan detail.

Now for the legal stuff:-

Please note, all buttons used in my creations are antique, vintage, or second hand, and will naturally show signs of their previous lives.  Such as gentle surface marks, tiny dents, enamel wear, or soft tarnishing.
Each button is carefully tested and securely set, but as these treasures can be well over a century old, they remain delicate and should be treated with the same care as any fine antique.

While the jewellery itself is professionally handcrafted from solid precious metals using traditional goldsmith techniques, designed to last a lifetime, the historic buttons, pearls, and crystals within these designs are inherently more fragile. Their age and patina are what make them so special.
To preserve your piece, please avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, perfume, or impact. Treat it gently, and it will bring you many years of beauty and admiration.

As each piece is entirely handmade and one of a kind, I’m unable to offer refunds, exchanges, or replacements for changes of mind, or for age related wear such as button cracking, crystal or pearl loss, or plating lift that may occur over time.
