“Mia” Antique Harlequin Glass Button Pendant
£174.40
This enchanting piece centres on a rare and remarkable Czech black glass button
Rare Czech Black Glass Button Pendant
At the heart of this piece lies a remarkable Czech black glass button, believed to date from the late nineteenth to early twentieth century. Highly prized during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, these buttons were admired for their deep glossy sheen and beautifully detailed designs. Often called jet glass, this material offered a luxurious yet accessible alternative to real jet and quickly became popular throughout Europe. In France, it featured prominently in fashion and millinery, adding dark, jewel like accents to gowns, coats, and accessories.
A Remarkable Find from a Bygone Era
Authentic antique buttons in excellent condition are becoming increasingly difficult to find. Their delicate nature, combined with more than a century of wear, makes this button a rare survivor. The scarcity of pieces like this adds a quiet sense of preciousness to the pendant, turning it into a small treasure with a meaningful past.
The Harlequin Colour Play
The true enchantment of this button lies in its captivating colour play. Known as Harlequin glass, it shifts and dances with the light, moving from deep ocean blue to vivid green and brilliant golden yellow. This optical effect, once the hallmark of highly skilled glass artisans, transforms the button into a living, ever changing jewel.
Handcrafted Sterling Silver Setting
To honour its striking surface and heritage, I created a sterling silver setting that holds the button securely and elegantly. The textured beaten edge adds depth and contrast, enhancing the intricate motifs and vibrant tones. A handcrafted bail and ring complete the piece, lending an added layer of artisan detail.
Sustainable Luxury with Meaning
Choosing a Porsha Bella Jewellery piece is choosing sustainable luxury. This pendant celebrates history, craftsmanship, and conscious creation, proving that doing your part for Mother Nature never has to mean compromising on style or opulence.

Please note, all buttons used in my creations are antique, vintage, or second hand, and will naturally show signs of their previous lives. Such as gentle surface marks, tiny dents, enamel wear, or soft tarnishing.
Each button is carefully tested and securely set, but as these treasures can be well over a century old, they remain delicate and should be treated with the same care as any fine antique.
While the jewellery itself is professionally handcrafted from solid precious metals using traditional goldsmith techniques, designed to last a lifetime, the historic buttons, pearls, and crystals within these designs are inherently more fragile. Their age and patina are what make them so special.
To preserve your piece, please avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, perfume, or impact. Treat it gently, and it will bring you many years of beauty and admiration.
As each piece is entirely handmade and one of a kind, I’m unable to offer refunds, exchanges, or replacements for changes of mind, or for age related wear such as button cracking, crystal or pearl loss, or plating lift that may occur over time.
