A Button from a French Military Band
This historic button comes from a French Military band uniform dating to the First World War. During this period, military bands played a vital role far beyond ceremony. They offered morale, comfort and a sense of continuity in unimaginably difficult times, performing at parades, official events, and often for soldiers heading to or returning from the front. Music became a thread of humanity woven through the discipline of military life.
The Lyre and the Language of Music
At the heart of the button is the lyre, a symbol long associated with music, harmony and the arts. Traditionally linked to Apollo, the lyre represents inspiration, emotional expression and the power of music to soothe, unite and uplift. Its use on military band uniforms was deeply intentional, marking the wearer not as a combatant, but as a musician entrusted with carrying spirit and hope through sound. For those who play in a band or orchestra, the lyre remains a powerful emblem of dedication to their craft.
A Button Revived Through Craft
This button was particularly challenging to photograph due to the exceptionally high polish achieved during its revival. The reflective surface catches the light beautifully in person, but can make the lyre motif elusive on camera. For this reason, some accompanying images show the button prior to restoration, allowing the lyre to be seen more clearly. In hand, however, the surface comes alive, responding to movement and light in a way that feels quietly mesmerising.
Soft Brass with Subtle Warmth
The button itself is crafted in a soft brass tone, lending warmth and elegance to the piece. This gentle golden hue makes it wonderfully versatile, equally at home worn on a silver or gold chain. The lyre sits proudly at the centre, understated yet meaningful, a symbol that speaks volumes to those who understand its language.
Handcrafted Silver and Refined Detail
The setting has been completely hand crafted in solid sterling silver, designed to honour rather than overpower the button. A refined gallery accent surrounds the piece, adding depth and architectural interest while allowing the button to remain the focal point. The result is a pendant that feels balanced, thoughtful and beautifully resolved.
A Symbol of Music, Service and Memory
This is a one of a kind pendant, rich with history and intention. It carries the legacy of music offered in service, of discipline softened by art, and of sound used as solace during one of the most turbulent chapters in history. For musicians, music lovers, or those who understand the quiet power of melody, this piece feels deeply personal.

Now for the legal stuff:-
Please note, all buttons used in my creations are antique, vintage, or second hand, and will naturally show signs of their previous lives. Such as gentle surface marks, tiny dents, enamel wear, or soft tarnishing.
Each button is carefully tested and securely set, but as these treasures can be well over a century old, they remain delicate and should be treated with the same care as any fine antique.
While the jewellery itself is professionally handcrafted from solid precious metals using traditional goldsmith techniques, designed to last a lifetime, the historic buttons, pearls, and crystals within these designs are inherently more fragile. Their age and patina are what make them so special.
To preserve your piece, please avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, perfume, or impact. Treat it gently, and it will bring you many years of beauty and admiration.
As each piece is entirely handmade and one of a kind, I’m unable to offer refunds, exchanges, or replacements for changes of mind, or for age related wear such as button cracking, crystal or pearl loss, or plating lift that may occur over time.
