A Chanel Design That Refuses to Be Ignored

These striking earrings began life as the original buttons from a Chanel woollen cape style coat dating to the mid 1960s. Designed to be seen rather than simply serve a practical purpose, these beautifully domed buttons would have stood proudly across the front of the garment, catching attention with every movement.

The 1960s marked a period when Chanel continued to champion elegant outerwear that balanced sophistication with practicality. Cape style coats were particularly fashionable during this era, offering graceful movement while maintaining the structured refinement for which the House of Chanel became renowned. Large decorative buttons were often used as focal points, transforming functional fastenings into jewellery like embellishments.

Architectural Beauty in Miniature

What makes these buttons so captivating is their remarkable design. At the centre sits the iconic interlocking CC motif, framed by a circle of textured gold detailing that resembles fine jewellery rather than clothing hardware.

Radiating outward is an intricate geometric pattern in deep black enamel, creating a striking sunburst effect. The repeating architectural lines draw the eye towards the centre of the button, giving the design wonderful depth and dimension. Combined with the domed profile, the result is a button that feels sculptural, bold and unmistakably Chanel.

The Perfect Balance of Gold and Silver

When creating these earrings, I spent considerable time deciding whether the sterling silver settings should be gold plated.

In the end, I chose to leave the silver exactly as it is.

The buttons already contain an abundance of rich golden detail, and introducing additional gold around the edge would have competed with the design itself. The cool brightness of sterling silver creates a beautiful contrast that allows every intricate element of the button to remain the star of the piece. It highlights the black enamel beautifully while giving the earrings a contemporary feel that makes them surprisingly versatile.

Each button has been carefully transformed by hand and mounted into solid sterling silver settings within my French atelier.

The earrings are finished with exceptionally comfortable clip on fittings that sit securely without pinching, making them ideal for both pierced and non pierced ears. Lightweight and easy to wear, they deliver all the impact of statement jewellery while remaining comfortable enough to forget you’re wearing them.
