Antique Belle Époque Button Charm in Sterling Silver

This exquisite charm features a French button dating back to circa 1875, from the nation’s equivalent of the Victorian era……the Belle Époque, meaning “the beautiful age or the golden age”  It was an indulgent time when art, fashion, and craftsmanship flourished, and every tiny detail spoke of refinement and grace.

The Romance of the Belle Époque Era

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, floral embossed designs became the height of sophistication, symbolising femininity, nature, and prosperity. Buttons such as this were miniature works of art, worn only by the wealthiest and most noble of French society. In those days, the privilege of wearing metal buttons was a mark of status and exclusivity.

This button has been beautifully preserved in copper, and like so many treasures of its age, its true beauty only revealed itself after polishing, as I honestly thought it was a black button!  But now it’s glowing warmly and full of life once more.

Handcrafted Detail in Sterling Silver

To complement its antique origins, I’ve bezel-set the button in solid sterling silver (925) and added a delicate crown patterned edge. To make the intricate detail stand out, the silver behind the crown has been blackened by hand, enhancing the depth and definition of every curve.

This charm is a testament to traditional Goldsmith craftsmanship, created entirely by hand in my French workshop using genuine sterling silver and an authentic 19th-century French button.

A Touch of Authentic Vintage Design

Inspired by the era’s love of ornate fob chains, I’ve included a sterling silver fob and swivel clasp that rotates 360°, allowing you to attach it effortlessly to any bracelet or necklace. The reverse has been left open to reveal the original button hook, which serves as a subtle reminder that you’re wearing a genuine fragment of French history.

Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.  These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals.  I never take my jewellery off.  However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look.  If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time.  If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
