You may think of crystal when you are first asked “what is the Czech Republic famous for?” The world famous Bohemian Crystal, but they are also famous throughout Europe for their impeccable glass making skills. This includes glass buttons that originated in the mid 1700’s.
Of course during this time only inserts for metal buttons were made from glass, but with the gradual improvement of the technology, the first entire glass button was produced. The quality of this button left much to be desired, plus there were only a handful of black glass buttons available.
During the 19th century the demand for Czech made glass buttons increased, as designers and customers from other parts of Europe became interested in these types of clothing decoration.
I managed to find 2 of these incredible buttons, but unfortunately they both had damaged metal button hooks. The damage was so bad that I had to remove the hook, but I have still left the back of the charm setting open, so that you can see the back of the button.
This button dates back to the early 1900’s. It’s a lovely shade of pale pink that melts into the deep lavender outer edge of the button. It features a gold gilded dragonfly as the centrepiece to this beautiful work of Czech art.
Did you know that the Dragonfly symbolises hope, change and love? Is that something you can relate to during this phase of your life?
I have hand crafted the setting for this button in solid sterling silver, with a simple patterned edge to the rub over setting. I have made this an attachable charm so that you can either wear it with the lovely blush coloured fresh water pearl bracelet it comes with, or you could attach it to a necklace or a string of pearls. The choice is yours.
You’ll also notice I have added 3 faceted lavender crystals, also from the Czech Republic, to tie in the colour from the button and to add a touch of sparkle.
The bracelet is a stretch style and will fit most wrists.
