This incredible piece of French history dates back to the late 1700’s, how amazing is that!
The Fleur De Lis was adopted as the symbol for the French Royalty in the 12th century, but it didn’t really become official until the 13th century. My historian has dated the button by the makers marque and the design used for the Fleur De Lis. He said this button would have been worn on the uniform of a head valet for Louis XVII. King Louis XVII was the last French King before the fall of the monarchy during the French Revolution.
This tiny button has been inside the palace of Versailles, it’s more than likely been very close to the King on a daily basis, as the head valet was responsible for dressing & undressing the King, amongst many other daily chores. Just imagine what this button has seen. Isn’t it just mind boggling that something that really should be in a museum, has ended up in an antique store, for only those that love French history to appreciate, to marvel over and to imagine it’s former life? As soon as I was told about this button, I had to have it, no matter the cost!
Now, I’ve transformed it into a beautiful button charm, with a bronze attachable clasp. I really love the way the bronze clasp colour, compliments the brass button. The button charm comes with this hand crafted, sterling silver bracelet, but you can also attach this button charm to any of your existing chains and bracelets. The setting for the button has also been hand crafted in solid sterling silver, with a simple rub-over setting. I don’t think this button needs any bells or whistles, its history speaks for itself.
I’ve said this before with other antique buttons I’ve worked with, they have a certain feeling to them. This button really does hold more of a sensation than a feeling. There’s so much emotion to holding something this old. The button has so many stories and secrets. The age is evident in the condition of the back of the button. As per usual, I leave a little window in the back of my button designs, so you are reminded that you’re wearing a button. I’ve done my best to restore the back of this button as much as possible, but unfortunately it’s not as brilliant and shiny as the front, but I kind of like that.
I’ve never been offered a button like this before now, so I feel confident in saying that it’s extremely rare. If it pulls at your heart strings, then please secure it for yourself immediately, because once this is gone, then it’s really gone. It’ll feel great to wear something this old, with so much history and being able to give that history to those that admire your new jewellery piece.
The bracelet measures 21cm/8 1/4″. I can adjust the size up or down.. please just ask.
