Crystals were first introduced to add sparkle to buttons in mainstream fashion, at the start of the 20th century. Adding cut crystals to buttons became a way of doing without the need to accessorise with jewellery. Add sparkly crystals to a blouse button or a dress with front button closure and viola, no need for a necklace or a brooch.
For so many women, post war, their jewellery was either lost or stolen. Money wasn’t easy to come by, but clothes were a necessity, jewellery was a luxury.
After Chanel started to introduce crystal and pearl embellished buttons to their post war collections, so many small, individual seamstresses were requested to make dresses and blouses with crystals and pearls in them. So a lady without the wealth to wear Chanel, could at least feel like she was wearing Chanel.
It’s believed a lot of these non Chanel crystal and pearl buttons were mass produced in the USA and exported to Europe to cope with this trend demand.
This button is most likely one of the Chanel button’s that was responsible for starting this trend.
Unfortunately the tag that had the information about what garment this button adorned, was missing, so I’m unable to give you the complete history, but I think we can deduce, it was probably a button in plain view. Perhaps a blouse, or dress button. Either way, it’s so lovely.
It’s a metal button with a gold toned metal overlay, with a pretty, raised pattern around the edge and 12 tiny cut crystals. The centre is a black plastic riveted inlay, with those lovely gold toned double C logo.
You could easily pop this on a yellow gold or silver chain, or even a black velvet choker. It’s a small, understated pendant, that’ll make a huge impact.
All hand crafted in solid sterling Silver, using traditional Goldsmith methods. Created in my 18th century French stone workshop, at the foot of the French Alps.
If you’ve been wanting a pendant that’ll make you feel special every time you wear it, then this is it.
Your jewellery journey begins with a piece of wearable history…. created by Porsha Bella Jewellery.
*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives. Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing. I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons. In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable. I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack. Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity. *Disclaimer… I’m not able to guarantee the longevity of any buttons that have crystals or pearls used.
Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear *some of your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing.
