These earrings have been completely hand crafted using recycled sterling silver, no, don’t fret, it’s still 100% genuine Sterling Silver. Recycled means that the process to make it is a lot less impacting on our environment, but it has no effect on the purity of the metal itself.
They feature 2 Antique Czech black glass buttons. Now for the history buffs, here’s a snippet of history on Czech glass buttons:
Czech antique black glass buttons were first produced during the 2nd half of the 18th century, although these were originally a thin glass layer over a metal base. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that the technique evolved and it became possible to construct the entire button from glass and incorporate the metal hook stem into the back of the button. Czech black glass is famous throughout Europe, being predominantly used for buttons, but also for beads used to produce jewellery. Many European countries tried to replicate these buttons, but they failed miserably which caused a huge demand for original Czech glass buttons during the second half of the 19th century.
These particular buttons I found in an Antique store here in France, where the store owner was able to tell me that she had seen many pictures from the late 1800’s with this style of button adding glamour to ladies gloves. Can you imagine who would have owned these before you? Can’t you just picture the elegant Madame, pulling on her elbow length satin gloves, with these buttons running up the length of them! Wow.
The buttons have one larger centre blue rhinestone, plus 4 smaller rhinestones surrounding it. They also have raised, scollop like fins, which I was able to make the bezel follow the scolloped edges to give a great pattern to the setting around the buttons. I was hoping the silver would play nicely with me and allow this to happen!
It’s nice to have a stud/post earring that still dangles. These earrings give you the comfort of a stud, but the glamour of a chandelier dangle style earring. Who said stud earrings had to be conservative?
I have also left the rear of the earring open, so you are able to see the original button. I like you to know that these are actual Antique buttons.
