“Frances” Vintage Gold Chanel Button Pendant

A Piece of 1970s Chanel History

This remarkable Chanel button dates to the early 1970s and originally adorned a striking red crushed velvet suit. Once I discovered its provenance, the design details immediately made sense. I could picture the silhouette perfectly: flared trousers, a defined waistline and of course, oversized gold buttons.  It’s the effortless confidence that characterised Chanel tailoring during this era.

The Art of Detail

One of the qualities that continues to impress me about vintage Chanel buttons is the level of thought that goes into even the smallest details. The surface of this button has been carefully textured to mirror the appearance of crushed velvet, creating a subtle but highly distinctive finish that reflects the fabric of the original garment.

It is this level of design consideration that makes understanding the history of each button so important to me. Knowing where a piece came from and how it was intended to complement the garment allows me to make thoughtful decisions when transforming it into jewellery for a new generation.

Designed to Highlight the Original Button

When creating the setting for this pendant, I considered several options. A textured edge initially seemed like an obvious choice, but ultimately I chose a smooth bezel setting handcrafted in solid sterling silver.

The clean lines of the bezel create a deliberate contrast against the textured surface of the button, allowing the intricate crushed metal effect to become the focal point of the piece.

Contemporary Details with Timeless Appeal

To complete the design, I paired the pendant with a crystal set carabiner clasp featuring delicate lab created diamonds along one side. This subtle detail adds another layer of interest while complementing the rich finish of the button itself.

The entire piece has been handcrafted in solid sterling silver and finished with a luxurious layer of 24ct yellow gold vermeil plating, bringing warmth and depth to the finished design.

What is 24ct Yellow Gold Vermeil?
Gold vermeil is a layer of real gold over solid sterling silver. To be called vermeil, the gold must be at least 10ct and plated at a certain thickness. At Porsha Bella Jewellery, I use 24ct yellow gold, the purest, richest toned gold, for a luxurious finish that’s both elegant and enduring.

Caring for Your Gold Vermeil Jewellery

Gold vermeil is a thick layer of 24ct gold over sterling silver.   Luxurious, but delicate. To keep it looking beautiful:

• Avoid water, sweat, perfumes, and lotions.

• Remove before showering, swimming, or exercising.

• Gently wipe with a soft, dry cloth,  no harsh cleaners.

• Store pieces separately in a dry, cool place.

Over time, gentle fading is natural. It adds character, but re-plating is always an option if you’d like a refresh.

Please note, all buttons used in my creations are antique, vintage, or second hand, and will naturally show signs of their previous lives.  Such as gentle surface marks, tiny dents, enamel wear, or soft tarnishing.
Each button is carefully tested and securely set, but as these treasures can be well over a century old, they remain delicate and should be treated with the same care as any fine antique.

To preserve your piece, please avoid exposing it to harsh chemicals, perfume, or impact. Treat it gently, and it will bring you many years of beauty and admiration.
