Oh the glamour!
Coco Chanel was very well known for her love of pearls, but she also had a real love affair with jewellery. Here’s just a few of her quotes regarding jewellery
“Accessories are what makes or marks a woman.”
“If I chose diamonds, it is because they represent, with their density, the highest value for the smallest volume.”
“Jewelry is an ornament.”
“My jewels represent an idea, first and foremost! I wanted to cover women with constellations.”
Chanel designers were the innovators in transforming a necessary, mundane fixture like a button, into the garments very own pieces of jewellery.
These absolutely captivating buttons are from the mid 1950’s and were originally designed as the closure for a cinched in waist, flared hem jacket suit with matching fitted skirt.
Normally, a button with this much sparkle would be worn on glamorous evening gowns, but Coco Chanel’s theory on fashion was that no matter the occasion, every outfit deserves a touch of glamour.
She was believed to have said “with buttons like these, a woman needs no other accessories.” She was referring to her pearl enhanced buttons, but I’m sure these buttons would have fitted into that theory as well.
They’re a metal button, with gold toned enamel and 4 very sparkly crystals that look more like diamonds. The button edge is like a wave of unevenness, which I did think it could be tricky to make a setting that looked neat, but I needn’t have worried. The sterling silver rub over setting is perfect and doesn’t detract from that muted gold tone. Of course, those double C’s are in the centre of the button. They’re subtle, but they’re there.
You will know by now, that buttons with the maker’s marque are very expensive, so I like to keep these visible. In order to do this with these buttons, I’ve had to open the back of the setting, but it’s off centre due to the positioning of the marque. I’m really impressed with how great it looks. Believe me, it wasn’t easy to do! But my persistence paid off in the end.
You can never have too much sparkle, so I’ve teamed these buttons with ear hooks that feature a larger cubic zirconia at the base of them.
I know I’m not meant to have favourites, but these earring would have to be at the top of my list.
Go on, add some gold and sparkle to your day, you really won’t be disappointed.
Your jewellery journey begins with a piece of wearable history…. created by Porsha Bella Jewellery.
*Please note, the buttons used in all of my creations are second hand, antique or vintage, therefore they will show signs of their previous lives. Some scratches, tiny dents, some enamel wear and even tarnishing. I cannot guarantee the quality or longevity of these buttons. In some cases there can be colour variations, and plating lift during the polishing process, this is unavoidable. I’m unable to refund or replace buttons that break or crack. Although I do put every button through rigorous testing to do my best to ensure their longevity.
Unlike costume jewellery, my jewellery is professionally hand crafted using traditional Goldsmith techniques and genuine, solid precious metals, so therefore you can wear your Porsha Bella pieces whilst swimming, showering and washing. These activities shouldn’t damage or discolour the precious metals. I never take my jewellery off. However, you may need to polish your jewellery a little more frequently if you want that shiny, brand new look. If you treat your Porsha Bella creation, like the treasure of history it is, you should have an heirloom piece that will stand the test of time. If you have any concerns about how to care for this piece, then please reach out to me and I can help you with tips on getting a long and happy wear life out of it.
*Please be aware that buttons with crystals or diamantés should NOT be worn whilst swimming or showering. Your crystals may appear cloudy if in contact with body lotions, moisturisers, hairspray or makeup.
*Although I rigorously test all the buttons I use, I CANNOT guarantee the quality or longevity of the pearls, crystals or diamantés used in the actual buttons. I would recommend a more casual, special occasion wear of these pieces.
*Designer buttons have no affiliation with the brand or fashion house of their origin. I do my best to ensure all designer buttons are genuine and from a reputable source. Porsha Bella designer button creations are not sold on behalf of or in conjunction with the brand.
