Don’t you just love the Boho chic this button is giving!
I’ve just been sent this button & from the moment I saw it, it has become one of my all time favourites. I instantly pictured it with denim and crisp linen, then I read the history card that came with it & to my surprise, this button was originally worn on the waistband of some Chanel linen trousers from the 1988 collection.
Did you know the Bohemian style and fashion movement began in the artistic streets of Paris, towards the end of the 18th century. It originated in France after the end of the French Revolution. Firstly out of necessity to live a minimalist lifestyle but now, it’s a way to express individuality.
I love that the house of Chanel took that Bohemian style and paired it with the luxury of French linen. The blending of these two opposites is something the house of Chanel has become so proficient in doing. How can they so effortlessly combine high end luxury with a style known to be without luxury? It’s amazing.
Although this button gives the look of turquoise, it is in fact a turquoise coloured resin that’s been used with a dull gold toned metal, as in keeping with the Boho style. On first glance, I don’t think one sees the intricacies in the metal work of the button. It’s really beautiful. The fact that the metal used is brass with a chemical oxidisation, so as to appear old and shabby, as is the Bohemian style, it’s so well thought out & deliberate. Those turquoise coloured pieces would have looked weird against perfect, shiny brass.
I’ve bezel set the button in a solid sterling silver setting, but I’ve added a lovely brass bail, to tie in the brass of the button with the pendant setting. It’s completely hand crafted right here in my French workshop, using only traditional Goldsmith techniques.
I’ve tried so hard to capture the essence of this button and I hope you can see that in the images, but it’s truly a work of art.
